Cheeseballs

Fergus was excited. Today was the first day of Road Trip with Stinky Cat Chuck. They were on their way to a mental health break. Fergus heard about mental health days on some talk show. He knew instinctively that a day wasn’t enough for a magical being. A week would suit him better.

Chuck was taking Fergus traveling since he was on vacation anyway, and Agatha was busy. Fergus figured he’d just have to put up with the cat smell in exchange for his own adventure.

Chuck had already planned on a road trip to Wisconsin, and according to the cell phone Fergus used as a smart television, Wisconsin was Cheesehead Country. Whatever the heck that meant. How could anyone have a head of cheese?

All that was important to Fergus, really, was if the food would be good. And the off-chance of meeting a tiny female unicorn.

Fergus wanted snacks. Since Agatha wasn't going to be around, he figured Chuck would let him have all the junk food he wanted. He didn't have much junk food experience, but he heard great things about it. It looked awesome on TV. Chuck thought it was funny that he was so excited about it.

Agatha, Cat, and Chuck all made lots of unnecessary noise about Fergus needing a seatbelt in the car, so the trip started out on a tense note.

“I’m freaking magical!” he whined at them as they all struggled to find a way to secure him in the passenger seat.

“I haven’t died yet, and I’ve been thrown around vans and in front of dragons and into demons’ nests! Pretty sure a car accident would be easy compared to those particular situations! Hello? I’m indestructible, remember?” He slipped out from behind the belt that was wider that he was tall and stomped his feet. “A guy deserves a little bit of credit, here!”

They had finally submitted to his temper tantrum and now Fergus lifted his nose toward the open window. Cats really did smell putrid. But since Chuck had promised a stop at the ShopSmart before getting on the freeway, Fergus held his tongue.

When they entered ShopSmart, Fergus froze. He perched in Chuck’s breast pocket, holding his breath in wonder. It was the biggest indoors he had ever seen. Even the Garden back at Marcella’s house didn’t hold a candle to this place. It stretched as far as his magical eyes could see. Fruits and vegetables were neatly piled into pyramids on the left, fat women’s clothing hung from rounders right in front of him, an eye doctor was to his right, and people, people were crammed into the narrow aisles that snaked into the store. It was loud and bright and yellow happy faces smiled down on them from all angles.

Fergus was enchanted and terrified, all at once.

“Welcome to the ShopSmart dimension, my little friend,” Chuck said, patting his pocket lightly. “If we were in Little Rock at a ShopSmart, it would look just like this. Pittsburgh, same layout. New York City stores are a little funky, all piled up on different floors, but basically, this is the blueprint.
